You don't have to be a black belt to come and join the academy. Sometimes I even prefer people not to have prior experience because styles vary and other styles do things different ways which can lead to habbits that aren't correct for the style you are taking. For any other information feel free to give us a call or come by and try out our classes, we always love to welcome in new students.

Yes there is, you still have to be able to get to those items in time but they are very useful. We keep a catalog at the academy were people can purchase items like that, I don't believe we have the stun guns though but if a student of mine wants one I would be happy to locate one for them.

Thanks for your comment about my post. As to the exact reason why they were made illegal I don't know. On most butterfly knives, the blade is simply longer than the law allows. My personal butterfly knive has a blade of 5 and 1/2 inches which I did not know was illegal until I had a butterfly knife confiscated by the police. At that time the police told me that the legal limit for a knife is that the blade could not be longer than 3 1/2 inches. I personally think that is a little short and am a huge fan of butterfly knives myself. I've never had that much trouble finding them though, if all else fails you can come to our store and we'll order one for you but i've found them at local events such as fairs for pretty cheap as well. The higher quality ones though are extremely difficult to find. Good Luck. It may also be an objection against the knife because alot of the people who own them like to play with them a little too much.....I would imagine someone going down the street twirling a knife around would make authorities a little nervous

This is a very informative blog post. I was wondering if you know why butterfly knives are no longer legal and very difficult to find? What is the specific objection to butterfly knives?

Hi guys

Good review and write-up.

I really plan to get back into it this year - get in shape and perfect this art of ours.

Thanks for putting together a nice resource. Personally I just got to put in a plug and say fitness rocks

Always good to read about the activies of people.

I have trained hard in the past with running, sparring gets the best results.

Thanks for your comment. Honestly, I don't know how it got into google news, until you just told me I didn't know it was on there. Glad to hear it though.

I simply made a blog site and a website for my business, cross linked them, linked to other martial sites in exchange for them to link to me and that improved my rating. I also make sure to try and include words I want to show up in google on my titles, I love to teach and I can't teach if no one can find my information. Unfortunately doing pics and all can be very time consuming so I most of my stuff is written. Hoping to get more video and instructional pics up soon though.

Hi all great information here and good thread to comment on.

Can I ask though - how did you get this picked up and into google news?

Very impressive that this blog is syndicated through Google and is it something that is just up to Google or you actively created?

Obviously this is a popular blog with great data so well done on your seo success..

Glad to see you enjoy the information, and I will try to get back to putting more references and stuff up lately. I love to teach and through this I am able to do it globably. I am not familiar with Q10 but I love sparring, I don't think there is anything i've learned as much from. Hope to have you as a devoted reader soon and I try to post up something new at least once a week so check back with us often if you can. Good Luck with your Training

Hi and thanks for the opportunity to comment.

I appreciate the basis of what was said here but the fitness and especially its training is so personal I am looking forward to more comments as this topic grows.

Great info and Im putting it into action with my kung fu straight away.

I have trained hard in the past with running etc in thew army but I have to say combining Q10 and sparring gets the best results.

ALso with the latest in mdeical science and wholistic techniques I would not be supprised if life expectancy rose to 90+ years in the modern world.

I didn't necessarily study in any school. Much of my family had taken lessons here and there and taught me what they knew. I had a friend who had trained with other people in Jujitsu his whole life but never went through the belts or anything and most our studies together were pure sparring. We always just fought until submission. The only formal classes I took were Ichinryu and never made it beyond white belt there. I personally didn't like Tae Kwon Do so didn't want to take it, and that's what all the other schools I know of were, so finding Rhuel was great. Been a student ever since and am more than satisfied with that training, I like that the little grappling we do is over in a matter of seconds and it doesn't become a wrestling match. It's easier for me, and works better

the guy that looked at your size was wrong, size ego usually means they don't know much about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or fighting in general. Royce Gracie took on everyone and won three of the first four UFC fights. he was small and they had no weight classes back then. What did you study before training with Rhuel? Inside trapping is also a great way to eliminate most martial artists weapons. Your right with the UFC craze everyone wants to take it to the ground even when they don't know anything or very little. I have had army guys come in the school and after six months of their basic jiu-jitsu in boot camp think they can ground fight. You get them in a hold and they don't know what to do because they only got a little training. The guys that get it stay with it. It's funny, they watch tv and think they have been trained as well. I agree it's personal what you take with you as a martial artist. I have studied alot of different styles and take the strenghts from what I like and disregard the weakness in them. I enjoy your blog keep up the warrior work.

You'll get it i'm sure, probably make it look better. I should have taken more time on it and i'm going back and fixing parts of it now. Nothing serious though, deepening stances. The butterfly kick you may want to learn without the staff first, it's a lot easier than it looks. There are some preliminaries on it, i'll try to record myself doing them and send them to you so you can get that down easier. Just email me at chinesekenpokungfu@hotmail.com so i'll have your adress and as soon as I get time i'll send that to you. I have a tape on Wushu basics I bought through Century by Zhang Hui which has been tremendous help.

These are my rules from my personal experience. I fought on the ground all the time before I began taking lessons from Rhuel, i'm even somewhat good at it. But I find that everyone I go up against wants to take it to the ground. Still today anytime someone hears I am a martial artist they take one look at me and say "I bet if I get you on the ground I can take you" which I normally just laugh about. With the UFC craze, everyone has lately has been going to the ground fighting as well. Of course, size will make a difference, i'm very small and people think they can dominate me on the ground so that's where they all try to take me. I have a friend who does UFC fights in full Gi over in Korea through the military who has awesome grappling skills though, he is the current champ over there. He swears by ground fighting, however that is his personal style, I rely on quick hands alot, I simply think everyone has to find their own favorite skills then dominate in that area, only my personal opinion though. For me, it's on the inside in trapping rang standing up, however, it's also good to be proficient in all other areas too. Thanks for the comment.

I just finished reading your rules about groundfighting. I was a little surprised then I remembered that it took me about 15 years before I realized the benefits of fighting on the ground. I agree you don't want to be there with multiple apponents and I agree that if your skilled enough you can end the fight quick with a debilitating move. But having been in martial arts now for over 24 years I am confident in my stand up and striking, kicking, knees and elbows to stay there. But when you fight the standard martial arts guy that has never worked the dark side or very little of it. thats where I take him, because he is totally out of his element and wastes energy trying to get up while you base out and wait for the mistake that will come. I agree somewhat on size and strength, but applying the correct technique, which requires practice, it is leverage that matters in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I have trained guys 300 lbs that are much stronger and some techniques will just not work because of their shoulder width or girth, but. and that is what I love about jiu-jitsu, variations on everything.

It's a hard form and I knew it would be, they make it look so easy during instruction then you realize your doing it backward or turning the wrong way. I hope I look half as good as you did when I get to the end.

Thanks for the information. I only heard it and did not see it myself so you may very well be correct. Now that I have the name I will try to look it up sometime and see it first hand. Besides, I think it would be interesting to see any Kenpo artist vs a Sumo wrestler in general.

I think the kenpo guy was Keith Hachney. He beat a Sumo guy in a mixed martial arts match. However, I think he used more than one punch. It was a number of open hand strikes to the face.

Sorry about that Troy. I wasn't aware you were also inducted, i've made sure to fix that to include you. Thanks on the demo. Rhuel tells me you plan to learn the compulsory wushu staff form, good luck on it.
